How Do I Get a Security Guard License in Canada?

In 2007, Canada began requiring security guards to obtain a security guard license on their own. Before, employers applied for their employees, but now the security guard holds his own license, allowing him the freedom of changing jobs and keeping the license.

Don't expect to walk in off the street and begin work as a security guard the next day. Obtaining a new security guard license has some specific requirements that take a bit of forethought and classwork.

Take a Course

  • One way to qualify for a security guard license is to take an approved security guard training course. Many Canadian schools and colleges offer security guard courses. For example, Edmonton, Alberta has the Security Officer Career College, which offers both online and in-person classes specialized to the student's industry.

A full security guard course program is about 40 hours long, with a comprehensive exam at the course's conclusion. A passing score must be obtained; the minimum passing score may vary according to the province's requirements.

Work Experience

  • The other way to qualify for a security guard license is to have previous experience as a police officer. Simply list this experience on your application form.

Other Requirements

  • Canadian law states that security guard applicants be at least 18. However, some provinces, such as British Columbia, only accept applicants 19 or older.

Additionally, applicants must be Canadian residents and have a clean criminal record for the past 10 years (some exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis). A criminal background check will be performed. A credit check and character references may also be needed.

Apply for a License in Your Province

  • Each province has its own application and has slightly different requirements. The Attorney General approves the applications.

Licenses are good for one year. The licenses must be displayed on the walls of the office where the security guard works. Renew the license before it expires, or you will have to reapply.
