Most areas of the home tend to have specific functions and designs. The bar is no exception, although it is one area that can benefit from a fun decor. Let your imagination go and see where it takes you; a bar can be as whimsical or fantastical as you'd like. Here are some ideas to get your creative juices (and gin and tonics) started.
A tiki bar conjures up the relaxed atmosphere of the tropics. Think grass roof and walls, Polynesian tiki god wood carvings, coconuts, leis, fish nets, bamboo and South Pacific wall hangings. Anything seafaring or tropical goes, including sea masks, flippers, fake palm trees and bright plastic flowers. Most important, maybe, are the drinks: Mai tais, Bloody Marys, piña coladas, voodoo-hoodoo drinks and any other fruity concoction flow freely at tiki bars, and the drinks are often served in masked tiki mugs. Tiki torches are festive additions, and don't forget the hula music CDs to complete the experience.
The classic gin joint, reminiscent of Rick's Cafe Americain in Casablanca, is a nostalgic nod to times gone by. White walls with a curved arch, accented by rich leather chairs, a substantial sculpted wood bar, brass accoutrements, a ceiling fan and plants galore provide the backdrop. Dim amber lighting provides a warm ambiance. And the pièce de résistance: a piano. Add a soundtrack from the famous movie and you'd almost expect Bogey to walk in and take a seat.
Light Up a Sports Bar
If neon is your thing, a sports bar might be just your ticket to paradise. Team-specific neon signs are pricey, but if you can find a few choice pieces that represent your favorite sports teams, they are a fun investment. Cheaper versions are available, such as "Bar" and "Open," which add to the overall sports bar atmosphere. Other decorations for your sports bar: team gear, such as jerseys, signed baseball bats and footballs, fishing gear, tennis racquets, soccer shorts, golf cleats and crazy pants, bowling shirts, running tanks, hockey sticks and anything else that you can think of that is sports-oriented. Hang miscellaneous items on the walls; frame prized possessions to keep them clean and safe. And don't forget sports-inspired coasters. And drinks? Anything goes, although a wide variety of bottled beers will keep your friends coming back for more.
