Not only are Vikings an important part of Scandinavian history, they also make a great kids' party theme. Most children love to make crafts, and what better way to uphold your Viking theme than to tackle a longboat, helmet or shield? Read on to learn more about what you'll need for these Viking crafts at your child's birthday party.

    Viking Helmet

  1. Grab your supplies: empty gallon milk containers, newspaper, duct tape, masking tape, double-sided carpet tape, paper-mache glue, glue brush, scissors, brown paper bags, gold envelope seals, and faux fur strips. Before the party, cut all the milk containers in half, then discard the top halves. Then, help the kids twist full-size newspaper sheets and completely wrap them in duct tape to make pairs of horns. Use the masking tape and double-sided tape to attach the horns on either side of the "helmets" (milk containers). Next, have the kids use a third newspaper sheet to form a point on the top of each helmet and cover it with duct tape. Cover the bare spots on the helmet with brown paper bag pieces, and brush paper-mache glue on top. Once the glue dries, help the kids decorate with more duct tape and a gold envelope seal, and use the double-sided carpet tape to fix the fur trim around the base of the horns.
  2. Viking Longboat

  3. Supply kids with pre-cut Viking longboat shapes cut from either two milimeter thick wood-grain patterned foam sheets or brown poster board. Also, provide pre-cut sails out of gray foam or poster board. You'll also need small gold and silver circles to decorate the boat, a slim wooden dowel, a hole puncher, brown and black markers, glue, double-sided tape, and assorted silver and gold stickers. Show the kids how to tape the gold and silver circles on their boats to decorate them, and let them use the markers and stickers as they like. Then, help them punch a hole in the top and bottom of the sail. Stick the wooden dowel through the sail, then help them glue it to the bottom of the boat.
  4. Viking Shields

  5. Gather your supplies: eight-inch diameter circles cut from sturdy cardboard, several boxes of aluminum foil, duct tape, colored stick-on gems and gold envelope seals. Show kids how to cover the entire cardboard surface with aluminum foil. Then use one duct tape strip to completely surround the circle and hold the foil on, and then stick on another strand of duct tape at a 90 degree angle. Let kids decorate their shields with gold envelope seals and colored gems.
