Traditional Dining Room

Dining rooms are places to gather over a meal and share conversation. You may use your dining room every day or just on special occasions. Design the dining room with a color palette that is appetizing and style that flows with the rest of your home.

    Function

  1. If you have space issues, consider combining purposes like installing an entire wall of bookshelves for a library dining combination. Paint the shelves black for a modern touch or carved trim to keep with tradition. Look for a table that has a flip top so the dining table can convert to game tables.
  2. Dining Room Colors and Style

  3. Change up your dining room by painting traditional pieces in modern colors. Paint a brass chandelier pink to match a chic chocolate brown space. A white pedestal table accents molding and trim that is already in the room. Glazed blue walls pop against white furniture and lend a beach or country style depending on how you accessorize the dining room.

A French country dining space is a comfortable theme. Use wood beams on the ceiling, faint patterns on the curtains and a worn rug on the floor. Mismatched chairs can work to your advantage by painting each chair a different bright rainbow color like yellow or turquoise. A bird theme is a fun addition to a dinner party and you can create one with nest place-card holders and a sky blue palette.

Make your dining room more inviting with fabric to help break up a basic dining room set and add character to a room. Slipcover the chairs and add a tablecloth to soften the space. Use a settee on one side of the table in place of chairs for added comfort. Place the dining room table against a window to make use of the window seat. Four fabric arm chairs around a round table can give the area more of a living room feel. A fabric chandelier is a contemporary twist on a traditional brass light fixture.
  4. Space Saving Ideas

  5. It's possible to make a small dining room feel like a grand hall. Lay flooring on the diagonal to make the space seem longer. Window treatments are an added expense and may just make your dining room feel cluttered. If you don't need privacy don't use curtains in a small dining room. If you need draperies, match them to the wall color so the curtains blend in without overwhelming a small area. Glass top tables and open back chairs allow light to move around the room.
