- Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure available to treat varicose veins. It involves using a small needle to inject one of several different solutions into the veins. It is generally done on an outpatient basis, and each treatment takes between 30 and 60 minutes. A local anesthetic and mild over-the-counter pain relievers may be used to minimize discomfort. Generally, a series of treatments are required to completely resolve the varicose veins. Costs vary by region and may be covered by insurance in certain circumstances.
- A variety of solutions are used in sclerotherapy. The solution is injected directly into the varicose veins. The appropriate dosage varies depending on the size of the vein. Patients may feel a tingling sensation when the doctor inserts the needle and again when he injects the solution. The solution irritates the inner lining of the vein, and the vein closes or seals itself in response. After a series of treatments (usually two to four, although in some cases one or two will suffice), the vein eventually seals permanently. The blood then reroutes through healthy veins, and the varicose vein disappears.
- Few side effects are associated with sclerotherapy, and most patients can resume their normal activities almost immediately after treatment. Special compression stockings may be recommended to increase blood flow to the affected area both before and after treatment. According to Vein Directory, most patients see between a 50 and 90 percent improvement in the appearance of varicose veins as a result of sclerotherapy.
