The colon is a long tube connecting the intestines to the anus for elimination of waste. Proponents of colon cleansing believe that all disease is caused by an unclean colon and that more than 90 percent of diseases reside there. The premise is that toxins like heavy metals build up in the colon but are not eliminated, and that much of the waste from the food we eat builds up and rots in the colon, causing us to feel fatigued and generally unwell. If we refresh our colon using dietary supplements designed to clean out the digestive tract, we will soon feel much better and stay that way, if we make the proper lifestyle changes like a high-fiber diet and more exercise.

What is Colon Cleanse?

Like any other colon cleansing supplement, Arbonne BioNutria Colon Cleanse is a dietary supplement designed to stimulate the body's natural process of eliminating toxins and food waste while absorbing nutrients. The ingredients a colon cleanse contains–a blend of herbs and other ingredients that are said to support digestive health–vary significantly, but the purpose is to clear out impacted waste material, thus allowing the colon to return to its natural state and go about the business of keeping the whole body clean from the inside out. Arbonne BioNutria Colon Cleanse comes in pill form.

Arbonne Colon Cleanse

Arbonne BioNutria Colon Cleanse is a "proprietary blend" that includes the herbs Cascara Sagrada, Senna, Aloe Vera, Rhubarb, Buckthorn, Meadowsweet, Marshmallow and Slippery Elm, along with Lactospore, which is microencapsulated lactobacillus sporogenes; Fructooligosaccharide (FOS), a complex sugar derived from plants and Psyllium, a plant seed valued as a dietary fiber.

Pros

Some websites dedicated to reviewing and comparing colon cleanse products feature testimonials describing how gentle but "effective" Arbonne is (meaning it does cause the digestive system to eliminate a great deal of waste), and that some users achieve good results with one daily dose (the manufacturer recommends two tablets daily). This is different from many colon cleansing supplements whose manufacturers recommend six to eight tablets a day in order to work. Arbonne Colon Cleanse is also relatively inexpensive, with a 60-tablet bottle costing $15 to $20.

Cons

Some scientists object to colon cleansing supplements because they may not be effective. According to Dr. Stephen Barrett writing for Quackwatch.com, "'Cleansing' with products composed of herbs and dietary fiber is unlikely to be physically harmful.... Some people have reported expelling large amounts of what they claim to be feces that have accumulated on he intestinal wall. However, experts believe these are simply 'casts' formed by the fiber contained in the 'cleansing' products.'" More importantly, there is some doubt as to the quality of the ingredients and the correct dosage with supplements. "As with all supplements, you won't know what you are getting. The Food and Drug Administration doesn't regulate colonics, so manufacturers can make health claims that aren't supported by solid evidence. Chances are, you'll be wasting your money on something you don't need anyway," writes Lila Havens at myOptumHealth.com.

What to Do?

The potential dangers of Arbonne BioNutria Colon Cleanse are about the same as any other colon cleanse. When you search online for colon cleanse supplements, compare the ingredients in Arbonne BiNutria with others you find. You may find that many of these products contain similar ingredients. In that case, compare dosages. If you are willing to take multiple doses or even mix a powder into food or drink, you can choose another product. Finally, price may be an issue. Realize that if you are taking multiple doses, a product with a lower price per bottle may ultimately cost you more than the 60-tablet regimen of Arbonne BioNutria. Some programs may seem better based on the purveyor's description, but if they don't list the ingredients or you find negative reviews, they may not be worth the higher price.
