Essential Oils Good for the Face


The face is a person's focal point. Most of the facial cleansers, creams, lotions and treatments are full of chemicals that are not gentle to sensitive and problem skin types. As a result, many people have turned to products with natural ingredients. Some have even sought out the use of essential oils to care for their face.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are distilled by steam or water from the elements of a plant such as its leaves, stems or roots. These oils are generally safe to use on the face in small doses diluted with a carrier oil or another solution. Essential oils are very potent and should not be used undiluted on the skin.


Essential oils can be used in a variety of facial skin care treatments. Essential oils are good for deep cleansing when used in a facial steam by adding five to six drops in at least a pint of hot water or a facial steamer. Natural or homemade facial masks can be mixed with three to five drops of an essential oil. Facial oils or creams can be made with essential oils by using no more than 15 drops of an essential oil mixed with a carrier oil like almond oil or mixed with a facial cream or lotion.

Essential Oils for Dry Skin

Dry skin occurs when there is not enough oil and moisture in the skin to keep it lubricated. Jasmine and rose are essential oils ideal for use on dry skin. These oils soothe and relax dry skin when mixed with facial lotions or carrier oils. These essential oils are also antiseptic, thus protecting the skin from possible infection due to cracking of the skin.

Essential Oils for Oily Skin

Oily skin occurs when excess sebum (oil) is secreted by the skin. Lemon, orange, peppermint and grapefruit essential oils are good for treating oily skin. These oils are natural astringents that remove excess oil from the skin.

Essential Oils for Acne-Prone Skin

Skin suffering from acne is sensitive and tends to be oily. Essential oils such as cedarwood, geranium and tea tree oil are good for treating acne. These oils are antiseptics that can work within an acne breakout to cleanse it and the surrounding skin. Tea tree oil also is an antibacterial agent that can kill the bacteria found in most cystic acne breakouts.


There are many essential oils that are good for the skin—for general skincare and for treating specific facial skin conditions. Always research the specific essential oil you plan to use to make sure it is suitable for your skin type and lifestyle. Some essential oils like grapefruit oil are photosensitive and can make skin more susceptible to burn if the skin is in direct sunlight too soon after applying the oil to the skin.
