A Bluetooth headset needs to go through a pairing process to connect.

Connecting a Bluetooth headset for the first time can be a fairly simple process as many headsets are designed to go into pairing mode the first time that you power them up. If you later need to connect the headset to a different device, the process is a bit more complicated since you have to force the headset into pairing mode. Some modern headsets are making the pairing process easier, but there are still a few steps you have to take to ensure the Bluetooth headset can connect to your new phone.

Step 1

Plug your Bluetooth headset into the charger that came with it and let it charge up until it is full. The pairing process can drain a lot of battery life from the headset, so you'll want to ensure you have enough battery power to complete your task.

Step 2

Find any Bluetooth devices that you had previously paired with the headset, and turn them off. Some Bluetooth headsets will not enter pairing mode if they find a previous connection.

Step 3

Access your new phone's Bluetooth menu and turn on Bluetooth. The Bluetooth menu is usually located under the main menu or on your list of applications, although some older phones may have it under the "Settings" or "Tools" menu. Once you are in the Bluetooth menu, there will be an option there to turn on Bluetooth technology.

Step 4

Place your Bluetooth headset into pairing mode. This process will vary widely depending on your model of Bluetooth headset. Some newer headsets will automatically go into pairing mode when they are turned on and they do not find a current Bluetooth connection. On other devices you may have to hold the multi-function button for several seconds, either with the headset on or with it off, to force the headset into pairing mode. Consult your Bluetooth headset manual for specific instructions.

Step 5

Search for your Bluetooth headset on your new phone. There will be an option in the Bluetooth menu that starts with, or is called, "Search," "Add," "Scan" or "New." Select that option and a list of Bluetooth devices will show up on the screen.

Step 6

Select your old Bluetooth headset from the list of available Bluetooth devices. Use "0000" when you are asked for a PIN or pass code.
