With the success of the Harry Potter series of movies and books, every Halloween brings a demand for Harry Potter costumes, as well as costumes for other characters in the Harry Potter world. In some areas, this means shortages as costume stores and other retailers struggle to keep enough costumes in stock to meet the demand. But you can create a homemade Harry Potter costume with just a little bit of effort and know-how.

    Materials

  1. The basic materials needed to create Harry's look includes about two yards square of black material to make the cape. You will use one dark-colored shoe string for part of the cape. A a small can, such as a juice can, helps to outline glasses. You need one black poster board. Finally, make sure you have some miscellaneous craft materials, such as a new pencil, glue, glitter and some craft paint.
  2. The Under Robe

  3. The Under Robe is the long black dress worn under the robe. You can use dark-colored round-necked dress, or you can create one using a dress pattern. Smaller children may be able to wear an over-sized black T-shirt for the Under Robe.
  4. The Cape

  5. Use a simple black square cloth as the cape. This could be material you purchase, or you could use an old tablecloth, sheet or coat. Wrap the cape around your child's neck, and attach half of the shoestring to either side using a safety pin. Tie the shoestring together in the middle to allow the child to don and remove the cape easily.
  6. Glasses

  7. To make Harry Potter glasses, trace around the bottom of a small juice can on a piece of cardboard. Space two circles as far apart as your child's pupils, and extend the drawing out to create the frames for the glasses.
  8. Wizard Hat and Wand

  9. Make a triangular wizard hat out of cardboard and allow your child to decorate it. Glitter is a good choice for the wizard hat, as is confetti or moon and star outlines.

Use a new, unsharpened pencil to create your wizard wand. Paint the wand in your preferred color. Once the paint dries, decorate it with glitter, and put a star on the top.
