Castor oil is an essential oil that can be used an alternative to benzoyl peroxide, commonly found in acne treatment. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, castor oil does not clog your pores and can improves your skin's texture while treating acne by killing bacteria. When included in your cleansing regimen, castor oil can potentially reduce or control acne.

Castor oil acne treatments can be used as a massage oil, made into soap, or used as a facial cleanser. If you suffer from severe acne, though, visit a dermatologist rather than attempt to treat it at home.

    Massage Oil

  1. Dampen your face with warm water and a clean washcloth, followed by pouring a nickel-sized amount of castor oil into your palms. Rub your palms together and gently massage the oil into your face. Allow the castor oil to penetrate the skin for 5 minutes, and use a clean cloth to gently wipe off excess oil. Castor oil as a moisturizer softens your skin and won't clog your pores.
  2. Soap Bar

  3. Castor oil is used in many natural and organic facial soap bars due to its gentle cleansing properties. It is available at health food and drug stores, and usually includes other natural ingredients such as shea butter, vitamin E and usually another essential oil such as sunflower or jojoba oil.

Be sure your facial soaps contain no detergents and are fragrance free, as these chemicals can exacerbate acne and lead to more irritation and redness. To use, wet your face with warm water and put the soap bar under the running water. Rub the soap bar in your palms to create a lather, and gently massage the soap onto your face. Make sure soap is away from your eyes, and rinse your face with warm water followed by cool water to close your pores.

If your acne does not improve or worsens after using castor oil, discontinue use and contact your physician as soon as possible.
  4. Facial Cleanser

  5. According to The Beauty Bottle, castor oil by itself is so potent that it needs to be mixed with other essential oils in order to be diluted. When mixing oils together to make an oil cleanser, is it important to mix more sunflower oil than castor oil. For dry skin, your cleanser should have 90 percent more sunflower oil than castor oil is for dry skin, 80 percent sunflower oil is for balanced skin, and 70 percent sunflower oil is made for oily skin.

While running hot water in the sink, massage the oil blend into your face and neck for 5 minutes, followed by dipping a clean washcloth in the sink. Wring out the washcloth, and let it sit on your face until it cools. Once cooled, soak it in the sink and wring it out, followed by letting it sit on your face until it cools again. Use the cloth to wipe the remaining oil off of your face, and apply 1 to 2 drops of oil to your palms. Rub your palms together and massage the oil into your face.

Before using this oil cleanser over your entire face, spot-test it on one pimple and observe if it improves or worsens after use. If it does not irritate or worsen the condition, it is safe to use all over your face (avoid the eye area, however).
