- If you have experience working with clay to make figures, you can likely work well with fondant in the same way. Alternatively, talk to your wedding cake baker to see whether he or she can make fondant figures. Either way, having a fondant figure of you and your partner to top your wedding cake is a fun and creative way to personalize your wedding. Be aware that fondant toppers won't look realistic, but they will be a better reflection of you than the pre-made wedding toppers available in stores.
- In most craft and hobby supply stores, you can find blank wedding topper figurines in different poses. These are typically made of clay or porcelain with a matte finish. To customize them, find acrylic paint that matches you and your partner's skin tones--you can even paint decorative details onto the clothing of the figurines. This is an easy, inexpensive alternative to pre-made African-American wedding cake toppers, which usually only come in one skin tone.

If you feel like getting creative and have some graphic design skills, you can make a likeness of you and your partner for the top of your cake. Get photos of you and your partner's faces, crop them and place the images onto those of a bride's dress and groom's tuxedo.
Make sure you save the image at 300 dpi (dots per inch), and in .eps, .tiff, or .psd file format. Send the image to a commercial printer to be blown up to get a larger image, or print it on your own if you prefer a small or medium-sized topper. Glue the printed image onto a foam core board--these can be found at craft and hobby supply stores--and let it dry at least 24 hours. Take a sharp craft knife and trace around the outline of the image. Attach wooden dowels or chopsticks to the back of the foam cutout with hot glue.
