Although no woman welcomes hair loss (also known as alopecia), Spanish/Hispanic culture values long hair on women as a sign of great beauty and vitality. Latina women often have hair that is medium in texture (neither fine nor coarse), making it among the healthiest of all hair types. Consequently, Latina women coping with hair loss often feel great stress during social interactions. Unfortunately, no specially formulated miracle product exists to remedy hair loss. To address the problem, you must first find the cause so that you can choose the right treatment.

    Reasons for Hair Loss

  1. Latina women may experience hair loss for several reasons. Hormonal changes in the body can be one culprit; as women go through their natural stages of life, such as pregnancy, childbirth or menopause, they may experience temporary and sudden hair loss. This is normal and easily corrected with hormone supplements, or often the body's hormones naturally balance themselves.

Other reasons for hair loss could be vitamin deficiencies, side effects of certain medications, improper dieting and exercise, and poor hair care. Consider whether you've made any changes to your eating or hygiene habits that may be related to the hair loss, and consult your doctor if you think that medication may be to blame. After you determine the cause of your hair loss, you can move forward with treating the problem.
  2. Treatments

  3. No matter what the cause, you can start building up the strength of your hair so hair loss can stop and restoring hair growth can begin. Protein treatments are effective to stop hair loss. Shedding and breakage start when the hair becomes fragile and thin. A breakdown of the hair's protein connectivity causes this fragility. Regular protein treatments will help to stop the breakage almost instantly.

To do your own protein treatment, thoroughly shampoo and condition the hair first. Apply the protein treatment to wet hair and sit under a hooded dryer for 15 to 20 minutes. Wash the treatment out and follow with a moisture treatment. Protein helps breakage and hair loss, but it can be incredibly drying to the hair. The moisture treatment will return moisture to the hair that helps it to start to grow back.
  4. Proper Dieting and Exercise

  5. Not taking care of the body is another major cause of hair loss with Latina women. A proper diet for long hair consists of lean proteins, probiotics and green, leafy vegetables. Eating a diet full of refined sugars, fats and fried foods doesn't provide the body with the vitamins and nutrients necessary for long, healthy hair. You will see a big change in the health of your hair when you cut these harmful foods from your diet.
Exercising helps to regrow hair by raising the metabolism, which stimulates the thyroid. The thyroid is a small organ in the neck that produces hormones essential for hair growth and weight loss. A sluggish thyroid will result in hair becoming brittle and unhealthy before falling out. Doing 20 minutes of exercise for three days a week can correct this for you.
  6. Vitamin Supplements

  7. Any vitamin deficiency causes hair loss because the body lacks nutrients to produce new hair growth. The hair is part of the integumentary system. This system is constantly going through phases; growing, resting and shedding. Hair has a life span of about six years. After this time, the hair will fall out. This is rarely noticed because new hair grows to cover the shedding hair. When the integumentary system isn't supplied with enough vitamins to produce new hair quickly enough, hair loss is noticeable by shorter hair or balding spots.
Eating the balanced diet discussed above, you are supplying the body with vitamins that are needed for normal hair growth. When going through drastic hair loss, you will need extra vitamins to offset the rapidly shedding hair and get hair growing back faster. Biotin, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin B complex, iron and folic acid are essential vitamins for hair growth.
