If your hair is thick, avoid the traditional bob that is all one length. Asking your hairstylist to cut a lot of shorter layers on top and around your face will help to thin your hair while giving it shape and texture. To style a layered bob, run volumizing mousse through your hair from root to tip while it's damp, blow dry until it's mostly dry, and then use a round brush with your blow dryer to flip the ends out while drying your hair until it's all the way dry. If you want more of a flip, use a large-barrel curling iron on the ends. Finish with hairspray to set.
Another way to wear a bob without creating too much volume is to wear it longer in the front than in the back. Different lengths in your hair add contrast and shape to your hairstyle, and break up your hair's thickness. To play up the contrast even more, use a flat iron on the longer sections of hair in the front and a gel on the short sections in the back to make them stick out from your head. This style is edgy and easy to pull off without making your hair look sparse. -
Take a cue from Audrey Hepburn and ask your hairstylist to cut the sides of your hair short and jagged, with piecey layers on the crown of your head and full, irregular bangs. To style this cut, use mousse evenly throughout your hair when it's damp and blow it dry, using a brush to angle the hair on the crown of your head toward your forehead. Use your fingers to pinch the ends of your choppy layers together, which will define them better.
The pixie cut also works well on curly hair. Be sure to use a deep conditioner once a week to keep your thick curls from puffing. To style the pixie, run a mixture of styling cream and curl-defining gel through your hair while it's damp and let your hair air dry, or blow dry with a diffuser, which will keep your curls from frizzing.
