Types of First Communion Headpieces

First Holy Communion is an important religious ceremony. Although what your daughter wears is not the most important part of the day, it does help create a special memory to cherish. Choosing a headpiece to go along with her Communion dress can be difficult if you are not aware of the many choices that exist

  • The first step is to choose the style of dress and then select a headpiece to go with it. Whether the style you choose for your daughter is traditional, classic or modern, there are several choices for her headpiece. Although a classic style of Communion dress still seems to be popular, the types of headpieces have evolved. The most classic headpiece style is a floral wreath with its simple, yet sophisticated, style.

  • Many headpieces work well for long or short hair styles (with the exception of a bun wrap), with all but a tiara being a traditional--or classic--choice. A white tulle veil can be used with all of the following types of headpieces. The veil can be plain or decorated with beads or pearls. If your dress has a lot of beading, a plain headpiece will complement it better.

Headbands are a clean and classic look. Traditionally, a plain white satin headband is worn, although you can decorate it with beads or fake flowers. A veil may be attached, but a charming look can be achieved without one. Barrettes, bows and combs work out well pulled straight back with or without a veil. Or pull her hair to the side, leaving the rest to curl around her shoulders.

Bun wraps are beautiful and a veil is easily attached to this style to create a sophisticated look. If your daughter has long hair, this is an easy style to complement her locks.

Wreaths are a lovely choice with or without a veil attached. The wreath can be made of fresh flowers, such as small roses or even daises. Keep color to a minimum as white should be dominant. Tiaras are a more modern choice, giving your daughter a more princess-like appearance. Keep in mind what the ceremony is about and avoid headpieces that are too flashy.
