Playas de Rosarito, or Rosarito Beach, features four miles of wide, straight sands just south of the United States border in Baja California, Mexico. Like any beach resort, Rosarito is great for sun and surf. But it also features several unique nearby attractions, such as a tour of a working movie studio and wine tasting at nearby vineyards.

    Movie Park

  1. Located three miles south of Rosarito, Xploration bills itself as a "one-of-a-kind movie park." Part of Fox's Baja Studios complex, the park invites visitors to learn about the movie-making process via static and interactive exhibits. Exhibits include props, sets and costumes from some of the movies filmed at the studio, including "Titanic," "Pearl Harbor" and "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World."
  2. Wine Tasting

  3. The area around Rosarito has been producing excellent wines since Jesuit priests first began planting grape vines in the region more than 200 years ago. The website Baja Wine has information on local vineyards and their visiting hours for those who would like to do an independent tour, while organizations such as Baja Wine and Tours provide guided trips (see Resources).
  4. Surfing

  5. According to BajaSurfBreaks.com, the breaks at Rosarito Beach are good for beginners to pros. Summer and fall are the best seasons to surf, and the best waves are found on the south side of the pier. The beaches at Popotla and Calafia, just south of Rosarito, are also known as good surfing spots.
  6. Golf

  7. Rosarito's Real del Mar Golf Resort offers 18-hole, par-72 canyon golfing with ocean views. "It's an enjoyable course, featuring nice views, a relaxing setting, and good pace of play outside of the prime weekends," writes Andrew Resnik of WorldGolf.com.
  8. Horseback Riding

  9. RosaritoBeach.net says the best place to rent horses for beach excursions is on the beach in front of the restaurant Papas & Beer Beach Club. The city's official tourism website recommends guided tours into Rosarito Canyon, with trips starting from next to Rosarito Beach Hotel.
  10. Shopping

  11. Rosarito has an artisans market filled with shops selling traditional Mexican handicrafts and souvenirs. But it is also home to a thriving handcrafted furniture industry famous for designs made of wood, iron and marble. The local furniture makers guild AFAMARO has contact information for local shops (see Resources).
  12. Whale Watching

  13. Each year from December to March, the California Gray Whale migrates to the warm waters off the Baja California coast to mate. Several outfits in nearby Ensenada offer whale-watching tours.
