Deep in the heart of Texas lies the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. This is the agency with which you'll have to register in order to become a licensed plumber in Texas. But before you take the test, there are other requirements that must first be fulfilled.
Register as a Plumber's Apprentice
Register as a plumber's apprentice in the state of Texas. The application form is located on the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiner's website.
Work as an Apprentice
Complete at least 4,000 hours of work as an apprentice plumber. This work has to be performed under the supervision of a licensed plumber and a master plumber.
Coming from Another State
If you already hold a plumbing certification from another state and wish to become a licensed plumber in Texas, you will need to submit a letter from that state's plumbing board certifying that you hold a journeyman or master plumber's license in that state. The letter should also note how long you have been a plumber and any disciplinary actions that might have been held against you.
Obtain Proof of ID
You will need to present proof of ID and that you have the right to work in the US when you take the plumbing exam. Ensure that you have one and that it is up to date.
Register for the Test
Fill out the Tradesman Plumber application and submit the required fee, which as of September 2009, is $27.
Take the plumbers exam. It consists of two parts: a multiple choice section and a hands on test. You will have to pass the test in order to become a licensed plumber in Texas.
