Women's Hairstyles for Thin Hair

Thin hair is a major complaint of many women. The texture of thin hair is fine and wispy, and often difficult to work with because it tends to be flat and limp. Shorter-length styles are the most suitable for fine hair because longer lengths can drag hair down and make it look thinner. Hairstyles with lots of shaggy and choppy layers are the best choices for thin hair because they create volume.

    Medium Layers

  1. Layers continue to be one of the most popular hairstyles for women because they are so versatile. The strands of hair are cut in varying lengths, thus adding texture and body to the hair, which makes it look thicker. Ask your stylist to add most of the layers in the back of your head and only a few in the front. This will add height to the crown and prevent hair from hanging down limply. Try to keep the length of your hair between your shoulders and your chin. A longer length will most likely weigh the hair down and take away from the volume created by the layers.
  2. Close Crop

  3. A close crop is ideal for women with thin hair because it sweeps hair close to the scalp, making the thinness less noticeable. Moreover, the short length gives more lift, making hair look fuller overall. A short bob or page-boy cut are two great options. The bob is best for women who don't want to sacrifice too much length but still want the volume created by a short cut. Ask your stylist to add a few soft layers near the front of the face to achieve a romantic, feminine look. Sweep your hair back and accessorize with a headband for a sophisticated and chic twist.
  4. Side or Zigzag Part

  5. A middle part has the tendency to flatten the crown, which only emphasizes the thinness of the hair texture. A side or zigzag part, however, gently lifts the hair at the crown, camouflaging the thinness at the top. A side part is relatively easy. It simply requires moving about an inch to the right or left from your natural middle part. A zigzag part can be achieved by using the end of a rat-tail comb. Brush your hair all the way back as you would when putting it in a ponytail. Place the end of the comb at the front of your forehead where you want the part to start. Slowly move the comb back and forth in a traditional zigzag pattern halfway across your head. It may take a few tries before you get it right, but practice makes perfect. Spritz lightly with hairspray to keep the part in place.
