Select three different colors of felt for each flower. Download petal templates online or create your own. You'll need two different sizes of petals to make the pins; they can have rounded or pointed tips, but make them both the same.
You'll also need household shears to cut the felt, fabric glue to attach the petals together and a pin backing that you can find at your local craft store. Use a button or a flat-backed rhinestone as the center of your flower pin. Depending on your selection, you may need an additional high-performance industrial adhesive to attach the embellishment. Fabric glue will hold a light button, but you'll need stronger glue to securely attach a rhinestone. -
Cut out six of the smaller petals from one color of felt for the front petal layer of your flower pin; six larger petals in another color for the center layer; and six large petals in a third color for your back layer.
To cut the petals, fold the felt in half, pin it around the perimeter and trace the petal patterns on one side. When you cut the petals, you'll be cutting two at a time. To make the petal layers, overlap and glue the individual petals together in a circle to form a flower. You'll have an opening in the center of the petal arrangements. Let the glue dry and then stack the layers on top of each other, with the smaller petals on top. Arrange the layers so the back petals show between the middle petals. Glue the layers together with fabric glue and let them dry.
Attach the center embellishment and let the glue dry before flipping your flower over and gluing the pin onto the back. You can use your felt flowers to decorate headbands and hair clips by gluing the flower without the pin attachment to a strip of ribbon for a headband or a barrette clip to make a hair bow.
