Holidays and birthdays are times to celebrate. Giving your boss a gift on a special occasion is a smart move. Not only will it make you feel good, but it will let your boss know how much you appreciate her. The key is to buy a nice gift but not spend an exorbitant amount of money on it. Spending too much money might send the wrong message and make it look like you're trying to get on her good side.

    For the Art Lover

  1. You don't need to buy a fancy gadget to catch your boss's interest. Many businessmen and women love to read, whether it's the New York Times or a good mystery novel. Inspirational books are often a good choice, since they make your boss feel good and get her pumped up. For the movie lover, a movie-night basket should put a smile on her face. Fill the basket with a gift certificate to a movie rental shop, a bag of microwave popcorn and some typical movie candies, like Goobers, Thin Mints, Snow Caps and Twizzlers. If your boss is a music aficionado and you know what type of music she likes, buy her an inexpensive MP3 player and fill it with her favorite songs. For the boss who loves visual arts, framed inspirational quotes would be perfect for her to hang on the office wall.
  2. For the Sports Lover

  3. Many men love sports, bosses included. If your boss likes golf, give him a gift certificate to a golf course. If he likes basketball, football or baseball, buy him a pair of tickets to watch his favorite team. Men love hats, so a hat with his team's logo is sure to be a big hit. If your boss prefers to be in on the action instead of watching it, get him a one-month membership at gym near you. A nice pair of running shoes will never go unappreciated by a true sports lover.
  4. For the Food Lover

  5. They say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, and in most cases that's true. If your boss loves to eat, a gift certificate to a hip, trendy restaurant might be just the ticket. A homemade basket containing his favorite fruits, cheese and wine is also a good way to go. Or you might consider getting him an automatic wine opener if he already has an extensive collection of fine wine. If your boss can't function without his daily cup of coffee, get him a combination cappuccino/coffee maker to put in his office.
  6. For the Overworked Boss

  7. If your boss is the type that likes to take on the world, she probably needs a day of rest and relaxation. Make your own at-home spa basket, filling it with things like lotions, bubble bath, scented candles, and maybe even a book on meditation so she can learn relaxation exercises and clear her mind. Or if she really deserves to be pampered, give her a gift certificate to a nearby spa so she can have the queen treatment for the day.
  8. For the Practical Boss

  9. Some bosses aren't into fancy gifts and would prefer something practical. An engraved Swiss Army knife is perfect for the boss who has everything. Quality writing pens are also a good choice for practical bosses. If your boss has an extra large workload, offer to help her with some of her work after you've finished your duties for the day. Simple gestures can be just as good as, if not better than, a gift you spend money on.
