As with many cities, Oklahoma offers great career incentives for both men and women who want to become police officers. Whether you choose to work in the office or on patrol, in the jails as a corrections officer or as a detective, there may be a place for you among the many men and women in law enforcement.

Your Rewarding Career in Law Enforcement

  • The Oklahoma City Police Department has many departments. It includes a central station, along with five sub-stations that employs more than 2,500 officers. The department also has its own recruiting unit that sets up special testing dates held on a nearby college campus in Langston, OK. In order to apply for the department, you must pass some standard requirements prior to even scheduling a date to take the test.

Requirements

  • There are several requirements needed to become a police officer with the Oklahoma City Police Department. As with any law enforcement job, a standard requirement is that you are a citizen of the United States. Applicants must also be between 21 years of age and 45 years old. Those who are 20 at the time of their application but will turn 21 by the testing date are welcomed to submit their applications for review. Applicants must also possess a valid driver's license, be of good moral character, are emotionally fit for the job, have a high school diploma or GED at the time of testing and be able to meet certain requirements of the State Police Pension Board. If you are already a police officer and you want to be promoted to lieutenant, you must have passed at least 60 college credits with C-average or higher, and have a bachelor's degree.

Applying

  • To apply for a position with the police department, applications are available both online and by request through regular mail. The application can be submitted online or mailed back to the station along with the questionnaire and a copy of your valid license. Once received, a notification letter will be mailed to you, along with a date for your initial interview with the recruiting unit.

The Application Process

  • Applicants are chosen for positions based on results of a series tests. The first is the physical evaluation of the applicant. During this exercise, you must pass a physical strength test in order to prove you are capable of handling the rigorous requirements of the job. Another test is the academy aptitude test, which you must pass with a score of at least 70 percent. A background investigation, polygraph exam and board review are completed before final determination.

Training

  • Training at the academy includes CPR/first aid, criminal law, constitutional law, emergency vehicle operation, firearms, self defense, and principles of investigation.
