Homemade Facial Masks for Extremely Dry Skin

Dry skin often occurs because of punishing winter air, dehydration, heat and sun exposure, but many people have naturally dry skin cells that regularly need an extra boost of moisture. Keeping skin hydrated prevents flaking, chapping and discomfort while also producing that coveted healthy glow. The ingredients for homemade, additive-free facial masks might already be hiding out in your pantry.

Honey Banana

Honey contains natural anti-bacterial properties and also acts as a humectant, which means it pulls moisture from the air and into your skin. This soothing superfood pairs with potassium-rich banana and avocado, which are full of moisturizing fats, amino acids and vitamin A.

Things You'll Need

  • Banana
  • Half an avocado
  • Honey
  • Almond or coconut oil
  • Bowl

Step 1

Mash half an avocado and a whole ripe banana in a bowl.

Step 2

Add a tablespoon of honey into the mixture. You can also add a tablespoon of almond oil or coconut oil for an added boost of moisture.

Step 3

Apply the mixture to a freshly washed face and leave in place for about 20 minutes.

Step 4

Rinse off with warm water.

  • Make the quickest, simplest moisturizing mask by simply mashing an avocado or banana and applying it to your face. Yogurt also works solo, providing a deep moisturizing treatment while the lactose enzymes remove dirt and oil buildup.

Soothing Oatmeal

Oatmeal is more than a comforting bowl of healthful nutrition. It's also a rich moisturizer for skin. In a mixture with ground almonds, honey and a little whole milk, these ingredients plump up skin and gently exfoliate.

Things You'll Need

  • Steel cut oats
  • Whole almonds
  • Honey
  • Whole milk
  • Almond oil

Step 1

Grind up a couple tablespoons of steel cut oats in a grinder or blender. These oats have more nutritional value and are less processed than the typical instant oatmeal.

Step 2

Add in a couple tablespoons of whole almonds and grind until you have a sand-like consistency.

Step 3

Mix together the ground almond-oat mixture with a tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon or two of whole milk. For an added boost of smoothing, vitamin-rich, fatty acids and moisture add a few drops of almond oil.

Step 4

Apply to the face and allow to set for about 15 minutes. Optionally, you can gently massage the mask into your skin after 15 minutes to gently exfoliate before rinsing off with warm water.

Soothing Yogurt

The fats in plain Greek yogurt deliver a boost of moisture. Add in some fresh orange juice along with a touch of honey and a little green clay powder and you have a clarifying, moisture mask. The acids in oranges fade spots while the green clay softens the skin.

Things You'll Need

  • Plain Greek yogurt
  • Fresh orange
  • Honey
  • Green clay powder

Step 1

Mix together 1/2 cup of plain, organic yogurt. Greek works well because it has a thicker consistency that spreads onto skin with ease.

Step 2

Squeeze the juice of a quarter of an orange over the yogurt.

Step 3

Add a tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon of green clay facial mask powder and mix together.

Step 4

Apply to a freshly washed face and leave in place for 20 to 30 minutes. The yogurt and clay will harden slightly as it dries.

Step 5

Rinse off thoroughly with war water and pat your skin dry.
