Bed bugs are tiny insects that feed off of your blood and cause skin irritation, bumps and itching. These small creatures are passed by coming in contact with fabric or bedding with insect infestation. Because they are attracted to warmth, they tend to live and breed in couches, mattresses and clothing. If they are not exterminated soon after infestation, you will need to hire professional exterminators to rid your home of bed bugs, and throw out your bedding and couches to prevent re-infestation.
Wipe down all surfaces with a disinfectant spray. If you have cracks in your walls or floors, apply Drione Dust to the cracks. Bed bugs can hide in cracks and crevices of your home during the daytime and come out to feed at night. Kill them by dusting the floors and areas they could possibly hide. Wipe down your furniture, and throw out your couch if it has fabric cushions and upholstery.
Clothing and Bedding
Wash all of your bedding and infected clothes in hot water and dry it at the highest heat setting. The high heat usually kills the bugs. Once bed bugs are in your mattress, it is impossible to completely get rid of them. Cover your old mattress in plastic and seal it to prevent bed bugs from passing to other fabrics, then throw it out. If you dry clean your clothes, seal it in plastic to avoid contamination.
Your carpet will need several steam cleaning treatments to completely rid your home of bugs. You can also treat your carpet for bed bugs by spraying Suspend SC onto the carpet, followed by steam cleaning and vacuuming. Suspend SC is an insecticide that contains the active ingredient deltamethrin, an odorless chemical. If you still have bed bugs after several steam treatments, carpet removal is necessary.
