Ice Maker Dispenser Problems

You might take your ice maker dispenser for granted--that is, until you've got a warm drink in your hand and there isn't a cube in sight. Learning how to troubleshoot ice maker dispenser problems will save you money, as many repairs are minor and can be done by the homeowner. Common ice maker dispenser problems include failure to shut off, not making ice, and making discolored or bad-tasting ice.

    Failure to Shut Off

  1. Too much ice is dispensed when the ice maker dispenser doesn't shut off properly. Check the arm on the ice maker to ensure it is not stuck in one position. Gently wiggle it. This should dislodge the arm enough to get it back to proper movement and solve the problem.

If that doesn't solve the problem, locate the ice maker dispenser's shutoff switch. Test the switch to see if it the ice maker turns off when you move the switch to the off position. If it's not working properly, the switch will need to be replaced.
  2. Not Making Ice

  3. If your ice maker dispenser isn't making ice, check the dispenser arm. If it is lodged in the full position, the ice maker dispenser thinks the bin is full and won't produce ice. Follow the instructions above in the "Failure to Shut Off" section.

The water line could also be the culprit in this situation. This line should be located behind the appliance. Examine the water inlet valve to ensure there is no blockage. Examine the water line tube to ensure there is no blockage there, which would prevent water from being dispensed into the ice maker. Clean the water line tube and the water inlet valve or replace them.

The ice maker dispenser also cannot make ice if the temperature isn't low enough. Make sure that the temperature for the freezer portion of the appliance is working. Check the temperature control switch for both the ice maker dispenser and the appliance. Replace the temperature control, if necessary.
  4. Making Discolored or Bad-Tasting Ice

  5. A good drink or glass of water can be ruined by discolored or bad-tasting ice. To remedy this problem, flush out the water supply line to the appliance or completely replace it. This line sometimes grows mold, particularly if the amount of ice dispensed is small.

Completely clean the ice mold tray and the ice bin on the dispenser. These parts can harbor germs and mold as well. A good cleaning should solve the problem.

Another option is to install a filter for the ice maker's water supply line. This will filter out impurities that can discolor the ice or make it taste bad.
