Homemade Exfoliating Scrubs

Facial exfoliating scrubs remove dead skin cells that rest on the top of your skin and cause blemishes, and dry or oily skin. While there are many excellent exfoliating scrubs on the market, they often are very expensive. You can make your own effective exfoliating scrub at home with common household ingredients and essential oils. Oatmeal and almond rose exfoliating scrubs take just a few minutes to prepare and can be just as effective as store-bought scrubs.

Oatmeal can be used as the base for many gentle, homemade exfoliating scrubs. It is best to use homemade exfoliating scrubs as soon as you make them. While many people make a paste of just oatmeal and water to exfoliate their skin, you can add herbs and other common household items to your oatmeal scrub to increase its effectiveness.

Crush 2 tsp. to 3 tsp. of oatmeal in a blender and pour into a small bowl. Add 1/4 tsp. of pure honey and 1/4 tsp. of apple cider vinegar. You can also add 2 to 3 drops of essential oil to the mixture, such as tea tree, oil of rosemary, rose, chamomile, lavender or geranium. Mix the paste thoroughly and apply it to your face in upward, circular motions. Do not put any of the scrub on or under your eyes. Let it set for about 15 minutes and rinse off with tepid water.

Another effective oatmeal scrub uses only three ingredients. Mix together 2 tbsp. each of oatmeal, wheat germ and cornmeal. Add just enough water to the mixture to make a paste and apply it to your face. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes, and then rinse off with cool water.

Almond Rose

This gentle, homemade exfoliating scrub only uses two ingredients: almond flour and rosewater. If you don't have any rosewater on hand, you can make some by pouring boiling water over rose petals and simmering the mixture for 20 to 30 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool, then strain the petals through a colander. You can also add 1 tbsp. to 2 tbsp. of vodka to the mixture to preserve the rosewater.

Mix together 1/2 tsp. almond flour and 1 tsp. rosewater. If you don't have almond flour on hand, you can make it by pulverizing a few almonds in your blender or food processor. Wash and dry your face, then apply the scrub, avoiding you lips and eyes. Leave the scrub on for 10 to 20 minutes, then rinse off in cool water.

You can also substitute 1/2 tsp. of honey or sugar for the rosewater, if desired.
