Very few black men prefer to wear their hair long, unless it happens to be in dreadlocks or cornrows. but even so, there are a number of different ways for them to wear their hair short. These short hairstyles can come in more than just an Afro, however. Buzz cuts, close cuts or even shaving it all off are options. You can find the perfect style with a little patience and exploration.

How Do I Know What Style Is Right For Me?

  1. According to azhairstyles.com, there are many styles to choose from. Search the internet for pictures of black celebrities with short hair. No doubt you'll come across pictures of people like Lenny Kravitz, who has a short afro. Allen Iverson has cornrows, and Tyrese chose the bald look. Younger men may also go for the faded look, in which the sides are cut short, while the top is left slightly longer. Take a look at your features, and figure out which one would look best on you. For instance, the reason bald is beautiful on Tyrese is because he has high, prominent cheekbones and smooth skin. Having no hair simply adds to the streamlined effect.
  2. See a Professional

  3. After you've done your research and found a style you like, get a picture of it and talk to a stylist. He can help you figure out if the style will actually work on you. If not, he can give you alternative suggestions. For example, short dreads might be a good solution. For best results, this style should be started in a salon. Your stylist can give you tips on how to maintain your dreads and keep them healthy. Lovetoknow.com notes that stylists should still be seen for occasional trims. If you're having trouble finding a salon on your own, find a guy friend who has a hairstyle you like and ask him where he got it done. He'll be flattered, and you'll get the information that you need. Needless to say, you'll have to pay for the salon look, but it will be worth the money.
  4. On Your Own

  5. If you're still not convinced that a stylist is the way to go, but you still want a great short style, try doing it yourself. Get a set of clippers and start with the largest setting. Start trimming your hair. When you get to an appropriate length for you, stop. From there, you can try any of the hairstyles you see in a magazine or online. For a quick and easy look, wash your newly-trimmed hair and apply a leave-in conditionert. Due to its natural tendency to curl, you may find yourself with a heathy head of all natural, beautiful locks that many men would give their boxes of texturizer for. Or cut your hair even shorter, mix the leave-in conditioner with some gel, add it to your hair, and comb it as flat as possible. Then, tie a do rag on and leave it all night. When you remove it the next morning, you will have waves. Prepare to be envied.
