Omaha is the largest city in the state of Nebraska, and was once known for its meatpacking plant. Today, it is know known for being the home of Warren Buffet and many Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies. Omaha has been noted as being one of the best Midwestern cities to live in. Omaha is the home of the college World Series, has a fantastic performing arts center and many authentic dining establishments. With big businesses and great quality of life, it is no wonder Omaha’s population is on the rise.

Omaha is ranked as the forty-second largest city in the United States, with a population of about 428,000, and has been consistently ranked in the top 100 of the best big cities to live, work and play in. The best area to live in Omaha, according to, is Papillion. Other good areas according to area locals and crime reports are Dundee, Ralston, La Vista, Bellevue, Elkhorn and Bennington. West Omaha in general is considered a great place to live in, and has many suburbs with new shopping centers and homes. Also, a rule of thumb when looking for homes is, if the school district in that area is good, the neighborhood is also good. There are very nice old homes in midtown and the Dundee area. Some people prefer to live in these big old homes with their surrounding authentic shops and restaurants compared to the suburbs with chain restaurants and minimal trees.

Like any big city, Omaha has its good and bad parts of town. However, there are very few places that are unsafe during the daylight hours. According to and local news reports, there are many shootings in North Omaha along Interstate 75. North Omaha is known by many locals as one of the bad parts of the city, and should be avoided, if possible. North Omaha is repeatedly in the news for robberies, shootings and gang-related violence. East of 72nd street in particular is known for being violent and should not be ventured into after dark. Other areas to watch out for are Benson, and outside of the Old Market area of Leavenworth between 15th and 30th streets. However, crime can happen anywhere in a big city, and it is best to use caution and common sense wherever you are.
