So you shouldn't put together your cashier resume quickly—take some time to add a few important details that may catch the attention of the hiring manager.

Focus on Cashier Jobs

You may be tempted to impress the manager at the store with your long list of jobs held, but it could go against you. Too many irrelevant references to other types of jobs, no matter how good the descriptions sound, could confuse the hirer or even make him believe that you are overqualified for the position. So only include jobs that are directly related to the skills that are required to work successfully as a cashier.

Customer Service Skills

If you worked in any capacity as a customer service professional, even if it was just answering phones at a reception desk, add this information to your cashier resume. Since cashiers commonly have to interact with customers in addition to ringing up orders, managers will be looking for this experience.

Knowledge of Cash Registers

Hundreds of different types of cash registers are used in retail businesses. They range from the small electronic registers that are used at neighborhood bookstores to the complicated touchscreen models used in restaurants. List all of the registers that you are familiar with either under your "Skills and Interests" section or as a separate responsibility under each job (e.g. Operated a Touchscreen POS cash register). You don't know what type of register the business uses, but giving this information may make the manager more comfortable with your ability to learn the system.

Understanding of Merchant Accounts

Many modern day cashiers must know how to process credit card transactions in addition to accepting cash. If you have a thorough understanding of merchant account rules, fees, and how credit card transactions are processed, this could be a valuable piece of information for your resume. Knowledge of how merchant accounts work may be important to the hiring manager since a retail merchant can be fined and even lose his credit card status if an employee makes a major mistake regarding credit card acceptance. List this information under the "Strengths" or similar section of your resume.
