Fun Costume Ideas

Dressing up can be a lot of fun if you have the right costume. If you don't like traditional costumes, and you cringe at the idea of cutting holes in your best sheets, then it is time to start thinking out of the box (although boxes can be used as part of your costume). Your costume should be something that you enjoy wearing and an extension of your personality. Sometimes finding the right one is just a matter of stretching your imagination in the right direction.

Celebrity Mug Shot

Anyone can dress as a favorite celebrity, but why not try for a different look and go as a mug shot instead? Usually these costumes involve wearing no makeup, not washing your hair and carrying a small sign with the celebrity's name and case number. Celebrities that have been arrested include Lindsey Lohan, Michael Jackson, Tim Allen, Nick Nolte, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.

Traditional but Dead

Little Red Riding Hood may be a nice costume, but wouldn't it be more fun if you went as dead Little Red Riding Hood? Add a few fake wounds, scars and some white powder to any traditional costume from celebrity to tourist and transform yourself into the dead version with the help of special effects makeup.

YouTube Celebrity

YouTube is not just a source of great videos, it can also be a source of fun costume ideas. Wear a red shirt and blue jeans and go as the "Evolution of Dance" man (provided you can do the dances) or wear a white shirt, too much eyeliner and hold a sheet over your head to go as the "Leave Britney Alone" guy.

Costumes with a Twist

One way to create a neat costume is to twist a familiar saying. For example, carry pompons and a sign that says "Go ceilings!" and you're a "ceiling fan." Carry a knife and a box of bloody cereal to become a "cereal killer." A few other terms that can be transformed into fun costumes include babysitter (baby attached to your back), lame excuse (use a cane and carry several excuses on paper), and self-absorbed (wear several sponges).

Balloons

Balloons can be used to make a number of cheap, but fun costumes. Pin several purple or green balloons to a brown sweat suit and become a bunch of grapes. Step inside (after cutting out holes for your legs) a large clear plastic trash bag and fill it with colored balloons and tie it around your neck with ribbon to become a bag of marbles or gumballs.

Here's Your Sign

Sometimes all you need to make a costume is the right sign. Carrying the sign "Nudist on Strike" for example means you get to wear your normal clothes. Another sign that can "be" the costume include "Shirt: $25. Pants: $40. Shoes: $70.Costume that requires minimal effort: Priceless."
