Rustic Cabin Decorating Ideas

Whether you are decorating a cabin or just want to create the feeling of a cabin's style, decorating with a rustic touch adds warmth and soul to the interior. The rustic look is ideal for incorporating cherished family heirlooms, flea market finds, re-purposed junkyard treasures and collections of primitive and folk art. Adds some rustic elements or aim for a complete rustic redesign.

      • The key to a rustic cabin decor is to avoid over-coordinating wall colors, furniture finishes, floors and textiles. Aim for a homespun look, with faded colors that imply pieces are timeworn. Antique whitewashes are appropriate for walls and furniture, but add some color with faded cornflower blue, lime green, pale pink and sunny yellow. You can also veer toward an earthier rustic look with gold, sand, terracotta and stained wood furniture. Textiles in vintage florals and paisleys can hang in windows, on walls, over door frames or over open shelving to create an impromptu cabinet.

      Furnishings

      • Shabby chic is the way to go in rustic cabin style. Avoid sleek surfaces and anything that looks modern. A farmhouse dining table or a charming white patio table are ideal for dining. In the bedroom, consider a wrought iron bed with loose drapery to create the feeling of a canopy. Comb flea markets for interesting pieces such as antique armoires, corner shelves, sideboards, nightstands, cabinets and telephone tables that you can paint with faux finishes to look like heirlooms.

      Accessories

      • Rustic cabin style incorporates pieces that are meaningful to the homeowner. Display a collection of blue glass bottles on an open shelf in the kitchen, or hang a floating shelf in the living room to show off grandma's old chipped teacups. Find mismatched vintage frames and paint them in faux gold flake for showing off family photographs or art projects by little ones. Hang quilts as wall art, or drape them on a quilt rack at the foot of the bed. Decorate a corner niche with a favorite art postcard surrounded by vintage dishes that contain the same color scheme.
