A television commercial is an excellent way to reach a vast audience and sell more product, but commercials can also be very expensive and time consuming. There are things a small business can do to help make the best commercial possible without breaking the bank.

    Plan Ahead

  1. Before you start hiring a crew and spending money, take the time to plan out your television commercial. Think about the things that are most effective on you when you watch a television commercial, and incorporate those into your ideas. Humor is always an effective way to get an audience's attention, but you need to be sure to get your message across while making them laugh. Hire a writer to help you best capture your ideas, or use the talent you have in your marketing department to create a script. Make sure you go over the script several times and do as many rewrites as is necessary. A television commercial will be seen by a great deal of people, so you want to make the best commercial you can. Work on clever ideas to get your message across, and try to work a slogan in with the end of the commercial as well.

Once you have a script, choose a setting for your commercial and map out how your commercial will look with a storyboard. A storyboard is a grouping of basic drawings made to depict the various aspects of your commercial so that a camera crew will know how you want various shots to look and what you want the camera to focus on. All of this advance planning is critical to making sure that your commercial is the best possible commercial you can make, and that you have crafted an effective message.
  2. Use the Resources Around You

  3. You could hire actors and shoot the commercial in a studio somewhere, but it would be more practical to use the resources you have at your disposal, which will save a lot of money. Make the commercial a company event, and hold auditions to see who will be in the commercial. A commercial filming could really help boost company morale, and by using your existing employees instead of hiring actors you can save a lot of money on production. Run production during the work day so that you do not have to pay your employees extra money to be in the commercial.

You can use your company's location instead of paying for an expensive studio. If you are a retailer then your location is the perfect place to shoot your commercial, and if you are a manufacturer then you can use some of the wide open warehouse space you have as your studio. Use your company locations and you can avoid the hassle of scheduling and paying for a professional studio.
  4. Some Things are Worth Paying For

  5. There are two things you should not cut corners on when it comes to the production of your commercial. The first: Get the best camera crew possible so that you can be confident that you will get the best final product for your company.

The second: With all of the money you saved on script writing, actors and locations, you should have plenty of money to buy prime advertising time on your local television stations to make sure your commercial is seen by the public. In order for your commercial to generate revenue, it needs to be seen, and it is essential to get the best possible advertising time you can to have your commercial aired.
