Australia is home to a spectacular variety of birds, from the Tawny Frogmouth to the Black-necked Stork. Whether you want to browse through pictures of Australian birds or look up a bird by its name or color, a host of resources can help you learn more about bird identification in the Land Down Under.

    Bird Finder

  1. The Australia Museum's bird finder directory lists 349 species of birds, ranging from Adelie penguins and Australian magpies to crested bellbirds and scarlet robins. Use the bird finder--at birdsinbackyards.net/finder/--as a resource to recognize the bird species that you may come across in Australia. Search by name, color, size, shape, or groupings such as "Birds behaving badly" or "Top 40 bird songs."
  2. Most Common Australian Birds

  3. Learn more about the 14 most common birds in Australia by visiting each of the following resources. You can learn not only more about the appearance, coloring, and markings of each bird, but can access more information about their mating habits and habitat. For example, the Australian Mound-builders (a species of Megapode) are known for building mounds of leaves and brush around their eggs while they incubate, rather than using their own body heat.
