How to Turn Posters Into Cool Things

Old posters can be used to make many cool things.

Posters offer an enlarged image of almost anything in life, including landscapes, sports players, musicians, movies and artists' masterpieces. However, these pictures hung on a wall often can become worn or lose the owner's interest. Instead of dumping old posters into a landfill, use them to create cool and interesting crafts. The colorful images can be transformed into a one-of-a-kind wrapping paper, or used to make smaller decorations that can be streamed from the ceiling or used as Christmas tree ornaments.

Things You'll Need:

  • Scissors
  • Bows
  • Ribbon
  • Cookie Cutters
  • Hole Puncher
  • Tape

Wrapping Paper

Pair a poster with a gift you would like to wrap. If possible, the poster should match the gift's theme or the recipient's interests. For example, wrap a DVD in an old movie poster or wrap a baseball glove with a poster of a sports star.

Lay your poster on a flat surface with the design facing down. Place the gift in the center of the poster and make sure the poster is large enough to cover the gift. If it's not, tape two posters together to make a larger sheet. If you only have one poster available, use tissue paper or other colored wrapping paper to extend the poster and make it large enough to cover the item.

Wrap the gift as you would with any wrapping paper. Seal the folds with tape. Adorn the present with bows or ribbons that match the colors of the poster.

Hanging Decorations

Look for aspects of the poster you especially like and want to highlight. This can be a celebrity's face or the colors of a particular design.

Cut the parts of the poster you like into various shapes and sizes. Stars, hearts and diamonds are some shapes you can cut by hand. Use cookie cutters as an outline to create more intricate shapes such as cowboy hats, flowers or cars.

Punch a hole at the top of the cut out shape. String a colorful ribbon through the hole and tie it in a bow on top. Consider using a ribbon color that matches the design on the poster.

Hang the shapes from the ceiling as decorations or use them as ornaments on a Christmas tree. If the poster was blank on one side, use these cut-out shapes as gift tags or labels for items around the house.

Tip

Instead of using a poster as a gift's wrapping paper, consider permanently covering a book or journal's cover with an old poster. Simply wrap the outside of the book's cover with the poster and tape it securely into place.
