A person can have wavy hair, straight hair or anywhere in between. It can be thin or thick, black or blonde, short or long. What unites all hair types, lengths and colors is the layered cut. A few layered hairstyles top the popularity list.

    Spikes

  1. Wear layers that are spiky. This layered hairstyle, most often referred to as the pixie, has the hair in the front and on the sides layered at a length of no more than 2 or 3 inches. The hair is then styled by putting gel on the fingertips and running the fingers haphazardly through the hair. This hairstyle is popular because it requires almost no maintenance---the wearer can run the gel through the layers in just a few seconds.
  2. The Bob

  3. Choose a layered bob. This style is probably the most popular of all layered hairstyles, particularly among women who are more beautifully seasoned in years. The hair is kept no longer than midway between the chin and shoulders. It is tapered in the back, and bangs can be left so that the face is framed well. Actress Lisa Rinna has worn this style for many years.
  4. Razor Chops

  5. Go for choppy. This layered hairstyle works best for straight hair. The hair is literally cut with a razor blade to achieve blunt edges. The layers are not exaggerated, but rather are more subtle so as to maintain the bluntness of the razor cuts. Usually the hair is no longer than shoulder length for this look. Actress Meg Ryan is a celebrity that made this hairstyle popular.
  6. Lengthy Layers

  7. Go for long, dramatic layers. This look works best for hair that is more than shoulder length. The hair is cut so that layers are subtle in back but obvious in front. This makes the front layers frame the face of the wearer. Typically, the front layers start around chin length, but they may start lower. The layers usually are curled inward toward the face, but they also can be curled outward. Actress Debra Messing and singer Faith Hill both capitalize on this hairstyle.
  8. Tip

  9. All layered hairstyles can be made more dramatic with the use of highlights or dye. For instance, the tips of the hair can be dyed in the pixie, while someone with long, dramatic layers can insert strips of a completely different color into the layers that frame their face. This means the hairstyles can be worn in virtually all settings and are easily personalized.
