What Does it Mean to Poke Someone on Facebook?

Facebook is an online application where individuals can meet or keep in touch with friends. In Facebook, you keep all those that are listed in your friends section, up-to-date on what you are doing. It is a networking site that allows you to find connections with other people with the same interests and an entertainment site that links you to games, chat rooms and other applications.

  1. Email

    • Within Facebook there are many options to contact a person. One of these is by email. To email someone with whom you are not "friends," you click on that individual's name, which takes you to her homepage. On her homepage, on the left-hand side, you can select "Send a Message." This will open up an e-mail where you can type the message and click "Send." If you are "friends" with someone, you can click on the in box at the top of your page and select "Send a Message." From there, you can type your friend's name in the e-mail will select from your list.

    Chat

    • On your home page, you can also chat with those that are considered friends. Chat is located in the bottom right-hand corner, and clicking on it will show all those that are online at the time. All you have to do is select a person that is online, and a new window will pop up where you can type instant messages.

    Poke

    • To poke someone, you must select him and go to his homepage. From there, just below to send a message, you will find poke. By doing this, you let the person know that you found them on Facebook, or you are just saying hi. It is a way to let them know that you're thinking of them without going to all the trouble of sending a message. It is the online equivalent of tapping someone on the shoulder.

    The Wall

    • The Wall is the list of messages on your home page. It is where you type your current status, meaning what you were doing at the moment, what you were thinking, or an open message to all that can see your homepage. It is where your friends could go to post messages to you and where you can post messages to them.
