According to the American Skin Association, skin is the largest part of the body. Along with its size, skin is obviously one of the most visible organs, so it's understandable that you want it to look its best. Your skin serves as a visual reminder of how healthy (or unhealthy) your daily habits are. The key to smooth skin is adapting a proper maintenance routine to care for your skin's appearance and your total health.

    Skin Care

  1. Skin is composed of three layers, and the top layer periodically sheds its cells (commonly known as flakes). If you speed up the process of the cell turnover, your skin will be smooth and flake-free. Practice proper skin hygiene by washing your skin twice a day, especially at night. Skin rejuvenates itself as you sleep, so any makeup or dirt clogging your pores will prevent your skin from being its smoothest. Apply moisturizer twice a day after washing your skin. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, moisturizer works by forming a barrier on your skin to hold in moisture, which results in smoothness. A moisturizer with added sunscreen can help prevent any skin creases caused by sun damage. Once a week, use a sugar-based scrub on your body and face to help remove any extra flakes. Make sure not to scrub too roughly or your skin will become red and irritated.
  2. Nutrition

  3. According to the American Skin Association, certain vitamins are essential in maintaining smooth skin. Vitamins A, B6,C and D all contribute to a smooth-skin texture by promoting elasticity and preventing skin cracks or wrinkles. Most vitamins can easily be attained by eating a balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and dairy products. If you feel you aren't getting enough nutrients from your diet alone, take vitamin supplements to get your skin smoother and improve your overall health. Make sure you drink enough water (about eight glasses a day) to keep your skin hydrated and your body functioning properly.
  4. Stress Reduction

  5. Try to lower your stress levels to improve your skin. Stress may seem like an issue that only affects you mentally, but it can also negatively impact your skin. The American Skin Association states that stress often comes with physical habits that are bad for your skin. You may inadvertently pick at your skin when you're stressed and cause irritation. Stress may also make you more likely to smoke or drink alcohol, two habits that can severely dry out your skin and make it flaky or creased. Try to exercise when you're stressed. Not only is exercise a stress reducer and good for your all-around health, but exercising can actually smooth out your skin by helping keep your weight under control. Excess weight causes skin to loosen and be more likely to form cellulite or stretch marks.
