Problems With a KVM Switch
A KVM switch is one of the most useful tools in the computer world--a handy piece of hardware that allows users to share a single monitor, keyboard and mouse among many different computers. With the touch of a button users can move from one device to the other, instantly gaining access to many different computers.

Check Your Connections
-
KVM switches got their start in the computer rooms of businesses, but falling prices and greater ease of use has allowed these devices to move into the home network as well. With so many home users owning more than one PC and so many users installing their own wireless networks, the usefulness of a good KVM switch is readily apparent.
But when things go wrong, it is important to know which steps to take. When there is a problem, one of the first things to check is the connections. Different models of KVM switch will have different connections, as will the PCs to which they are connected. For instance, many newer PCs contain connections for a USB mouse and keyboard, while others will have the old style PS/2 connection. In some cases, hooking an old style PS/2 computer to a KVM switch with USB connections can cause problems--even if a PS/2 to USB adapter is used. If a PS/2 style KVM is available, it may work better with these old PCs.
Check Your Keyboard, Mouse
-
In many cases, something as simple as a faulty keyboard can cause all kinds of strange malfunctions on your KVM switch. A bad keyboard can cause many different issues, from a complete lack of response to a delayed reaction when typing. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is a good idea to grab another keyboard and see if that alleviates the problem.
The same is true of the mouse you attach to your KVM switch. If the mouse is faulty or just a bit too sensitive, you may experience problems with the cursor jumping around on the screen, and you may find the mouse difficult to use. If any of these symptoms are seen, it may be beneficial to attach a new mouse to see if that alleviates the problem.
Attach a New Monitor
-
One of the biggest advantages of using a KVM switch is that it allows you to share a single monitor between a number of different PCs. But if you have problems with that monitor, this big advantage can turn into a major handicap. It is important to choose your monitor carefully when using a KVM switch, especially if you will be attaching many different models of PC.
Some newer monitors will be able to automatically calibrate and adjust the screen resolution to fit each new PC as it is selected, while others may have trouble with the different mode and stop responding. If you are having problems with the display attached to your KVM, look for a newer model monitor. Since so many KVMs reside in computer rooms, there is often a temptation to use an older style monitor that would otherwise be in storage, but, in many cases, it is better to attach a new, state-of-the-art monitor for peak performance.
