Do you hate the chemicals and synthetic ingredients included in commercial shampoos? If so, then homemade herbal shampoos may be an option for you. There are retailers that carry natural shampoos but they can be expensive. With a few ingredients you can make your own herbal shampoo and save some money.

    Select Ingredients

  1. Castile soap is an all-natural, plant based soap. It comes in both liquid and bar forms and both can be used to make your own shampoo. Simply grate the bar if you want to use it as an ingredient or just measure and pour the amount you need of the liquid form. If possible use distilled water, because it is free of the chemicals that can dull your hair. You will want to add a little olive oil to your shampoo as a moisturizer. Other options for the oil are sesame oil or almond oil.

You can choose one or a combination of essential oils and add a few drops to your shampoo. Tea tree oil is a natural astringent and will make your scalp feel cool. Lavender does the same thing and it has a floral scent. There are many other essential oils that you can add to give your shampoo a particular aroma.
  2. Tools

  3. A mixing bowl will be needed to combine your ingredients or use a pitcher. A pitcher will make it easier to pour the finished product into it's container later on. Have a spoon or similar utensil handy to stir the ingredients. Last but not least, you'll need a container to keep your new shampoo in. An empty shampoo bottle will suffice because it can be refilled as needed.
  4. Make It

  5. Combine your selected ingredients in a bowl or pitcher and stir until thoroughly combined. Once mixed, pour shampoo into the shampoo bottle or similar container for storage.
