MREs, or Meals-Ready-to-Eat, are complete meals in one package provided by the U.S. military to the troops. Each MRE provides 1,200 to 1,400 calories, and is a balanced meal from entree to dessert. There are regulations on purchasing them, however, so take care exactly where you buy your meals.

  1. Official MREs

    • Official MREs that are not past their expiration dates are only legal for purchase on U.S. military installations. Military members are welcome to buy them on base as emergency supplies for home use. Ask everyone you know to find an acquaintance currently in the military or reserves to get legal MREs.

    Surplus Stores

    • Army-Navy surplus stores often have military MREs, but they are usually past their expiration dates, so there is no guarantee how long they will last. The usual MRE is good for four to six years without being stored in extreme conditions, so estimate the remaining time by using the expiration date.

    Civilian Sources

    • Many of the companies that make MREs for the military make almost identical meals for civilian use. The only difference between the two is the matches and perhaps the heater for the main dish, depending on the brand. Sopakco and Ameriqual are two companies that supply both the military and civilian market, and sell the civilian versions online.

    Places to Avoid

    • It may seem simple to pick up MREs at many civilian sources, but most of them are illegal. Gun shows often have dealers who specialize in MREs, but they are often expired and almost always not legal to buy. You can often find MREs on eBay, but these are always illegal and are getting more difficult to purchase as the military pursues prosecution for these sales. A military trial is not worth getting stock for your campgrounds or hurricane supplies; go with the civilian version and don't take any chances.
