You can turn canning jars into inexpensive craft projects. You may already have a few jars in the basement. Use canning jars as decorations or gifts. Leave the canning jar as it is for a country look or dress it up for a more elegant craft.

    Candles and Lamps

  1. You can inexpensively turn a canning jar into candleholders or luminaria. Start out with a shallow dish filled with water. Spray floral spray paint onto the top of the water. This allows you to create a glazed effect on the glass jar. Dip the outside of the canning jar into the paint and water mixture and coat the outside of the glass for a marbled effect. Make sure to use masks and eye protection when working with spray paint. According to the Better Homes and Gardens website, you shouldn't eat out of the finished piece and be careful when washing it.

You can use a plain canning jar as a candle holder. This could even work for a country wedding centerpiece. Fill the jars with items that can withstand heat. This could be marbles, craft gems or buttons. Fill the canning jar halfway full of your desired items. Put a votive candleholder and candle inside the jar.

Turn a canning jar into a lamp to fit with the overall theme of your room. Fill the jar full of spools of thread for a sewing room or potpourri for a living room. Use the canning jar to display small toys or a coin collection. Look for a lamp kit where the cord is next to the socket. This way you won't have to drill a hole in the canning jar to thread the wire through. Use heavier items inside the jar if you have an oversized shade.
  2. Pincushion Craft

  3. Turn a canning jar into a pincushion for a customized sewing room. Cut a circle of fabric an inch larger than the jar lid. Place the fabric right-side down on top of the jar ring. Cotton balls provide cushioning. Put the lid on top of the cotton balls and wrap the edges of the fabric around it. Hot glue will keep the fabric in place. Fill the glass jar with decorative ribbon or buttons and put the pincushion on top.
  4. Decorative Storage

  5. Canning jars can help you stay organized. Your child can decorate the outside of a canning jar with Popsicle sticks or fabric scraps. Hide any unfinished edges with ribbon or tassel trim. Affix seashells or old keys to the outside of the jar using glue. A set of smaller canning jars will help store paperclips and stencils for an organized craft room or desk.
