Adobe Photoshop is a computer graphics program that allows users to create and edit images. By using the Type tool, users can add text to the images choosing from a wide array of fonts and styles. Effects can be added to the text to create drop shadows, add texture or add a soft glow. Learn how to add text to your images using this Photoshop text tutorial.

    Adding Text

  1. Before adding text to an image, it is always a good idea to first create a new layer specifically for the text. That way, you can go back in and edit the text without disturbing sections of the image or vice versa. If you will be adding a lot of text to an image, consider breaking the text up into sections, each with its own layer for easier manageability. To create a text layer, select "New" under the Layer tab and choose "Layer."

Once you have created a new layer, the next step is placing the text on the image. To do this, you will need to create a text box. Select the "Type tool" from the Tools menu and decide if you want the text to appear horizontally or vertically on the image. Click on the area of the image where the text will be placed and drag the mouse over to create the text box.

Adjust the width and height of the text box by dragging one of the anchors located on the corners or sides of the box. To make the box larger while keeping the same height/width ratio, hold the "Ctrl" button and drag a corner anchor.

To reposition the text box, click the "Move tool" and drag the box to the desired location. Once the text box is ready, select the "Type tool," click inside the "text box" and begin typing. Remember that you can always readjust the size and placement of the text box as you work.
  2. Text Attributes

  3. When you create a text box, the text attribute menu will open on the menu bar. On this bar, you will be able to choose the font type, style and size. To change the color of the text, double-click on the "color box" to open the color palette.

The bar contains options to set an anti-alias method and adjust the alignment of the text within the text box. There are also tools that will let you change the direction of the text or create a warped text.
  4. Text Effects

  5. To add effects to the text, right-click on the "text layer" in the Layers palette; this will open the Layer Style box. Here you will find effects such as drop shadow, bevel and emboss, texture and outer glow.

Add an effect by checking the "effect box." A preview of the effect will appear in the right-hand pane and your text will also temporarily show the effect. To adjust the effect settings, double-click on the "effect title" to open the setting options.

Once you have created the desired text effect, click "OK" to save the settings. A list of the effects that you added will appear on the text layer in the layers palette. To remove or adjust an effect, simply click on the "effect name" to reopen the style box.
