The window over the kitchen sink is only 30 inches high but 50 inches wide. The front door has a series of windows in the top panel that not only are small, but the shapes do not lend themselves to curtains. The bathroom has three windows that are only 27- by 38-inches. There are several options for window treatments for these small windows.
Decorative Window Film
Use decorative window film to cover windows that are unusually shaped or have no room for curtain hardware. Depending upon the design, these films can provide privacy for small bathroom windows or reduce intense sunlight coming through a window in a door.
Application depends upon the style. All window film is measured and cut in a similar fashion to fit the window. Some film has a sticky adhesive while other film "clings" to a window dampened with soapy water. Because they do not use an adhesive, the clingy films are easily removed and can be reused.
These window films can be purchased at home improvement stores and come in a variety of designs, from frosted to stained glass.
Select curtains that fit the style of the room rather than the small window. "How to Choose Window Curtains" on Building Materials 365 recommends using bold colors to draw attention to smaller windows. Chiff's "How to Design Window Treatments" suggests using light-colored panels that start well above the window and puddle onto the floor to enlarge the appearance of the window.
Use lace panels in upper-story dormer windows; this softer vintage look allows light through the small windows and still provides privacy. Cafe rods will not detract from the lace panels' appearance. Provide balance to the house's curb appeal by using lace panels in all the dormer windows.
Create a unique look for a window by using the decorative window film in the top half and lace curtains in the lower half.
