Foot odor is caused by the bacteria that builds up from sweaty feet. To prevent smelly feet, wear cotton socks to absorb sweat and allow the feet to breathe. Air out feet and shoes frequently to let sweat evaporate and prevent bacteria growth. Soaking agents such as tea can help keep feet dry and control odor.

Using Tea to Cure Smelly Feet

  1. Tea contains tannins which are astringent plant polyphenols that can be used to absorb odor-causing perspiration. Boil 1 quart of water and then add five teabags and brew for 10 minutes. Let the water cool so that you can place your feet in the water comfortably without causing additional perspiration. Soak your feet for 20 to 30 minutes and dry thoroughly. Apply foot powder to keep feet dry. Repeat twice a day until foot odor is under control and then reduce to twice a week to keep smelly feet from reoccurring. For additional benefits, use flavored teas like lemon, peach or mango to allow a pleasant scent to emit from your feet.
