"Now you're cooking with electricity" just doesn't have the same ring to it as "Now you're cooking with gas." Professional chefs and home gourmets alike love gas for it's cooking properties. Consider a few tips in case your range tries to take the night off.
Clean the Burners
Remove the burner grates, and make sure the gas ports on the burners are clean and free of obstructions. Food likes to collect down there and, as it burns, can cake up and clog the ports. Take a pin or thin piece of metal and remove any food particles. Don't use wood items such as toothpicks because they may become lodged inside and damage the burners.
Older Models - Check the Pilot Light
Open the oven door. Remove the bottom of the oven to gain access to the pilot light. On some models, you might have to undo a couple of screws before you can take out the bottom. You will see the pilot light at the back of the oven, below the gas inlet tubes. The pilot light should be blue and about 1/4 to 1/2 inch high. A yellow light indicates that the flame isn't getting enough air. Use a screwdriver to adjust the pilot light per the manufacturers instructions.
Newer Electronic Models - Check the ignition
Open the door, and remove the bottom of the oven. On some models, a few screws are present that need to be taken out before this can be done. Leave the door open, and turn the oven switch to the LIGHT position. You should see the gas light along the length of the burner. Turn the oven off. If you didn't see the light, it means you have a faulty ignition. These parts are not meant to be serviced by DIYers, and you should call a professional.
If the pilots are working but you're still experiencing problems with oven temperatures, it could be the thermostat. To test this, take an oven thermometer, and set it inside. With the door closed, set the oven to any temperature between 300 and 400 degrees. Check the temperature on the thermometer after half an hour. If it is more than 25 degrees off what the temperature dial says, the thermostat needs to be recalibrated.
