Marching band members (or "band nerds," as they are sometimes affectionately called) are notoriously proud of what they do. Most wear their band nerd status like a hard-won medal. So when one of these proud and creative creatures graduates, an ordinary graduation gift just won't do. They need something special.
Musicians can always use new accessories for their band habit. Tuners, music stands, sheet music and metronomes are all useful gifts that just about any musician will appreciate. Just about every instrument has a small accessory that needs to be replaced once in a while: drummers need new sticks, woodwind players need new reeds and brass players can sometimes use neck straps, marching music stands or new mouthpieces.
Gifts for the Music Enthusiast
Chances are the musician in your life also likes to listen to music. Graduation gifts for the music lover can include a DVD of award-winning marching band performances or a CD of the most well-loved marching band songs. You can go a step further and track down a CD of a well-known musician who plays the same instrument as your graduate.
Tickets to a symphony performance or other concert are also a great gift for your band nerd. If you're feeling particularly generous, plan an entire post-graduation vacation, complete with plane tickets, accommodations and tickets to a special concert.
Regardless of skill level, every graduating musician has some room for improvement. Give them the gift of lessons with a private tutor to help them keep sharp after their in-school lessons are over. In 2009, private lessons ranged from $15 per half-hour session with a student tutor to $50 or more per half-hour session with a seasoned professional musician.
Marching band-related clothing and accessories are just about always a great idea. There's no shortage of funny band nerd clothing available online. T-shirts or hooded sweatshirts with band slogans or the appropriate school insignia are appreciated by nearly every marching band member.
If you're positively stumped about what to get for your graduating band nerd, you can't go wrong with a gift certificate to a local music store. Whether your graduate needs a new instrument before starting the next phase of his life or just needs to stock up on reeds or practice books, a music store gift certificate will let him pick out exactly what he needs.
