- When installing a security monitoring system, there are several different tools and materials that you should know about. You can purchase a security monitoring system as a kit that comes with the monitor, the wiring and two to eight cameras. Other kits may also come with a computer hard drive that will record all activity for one month. The cameras are available as infrared, motion sensitive and weatherproof, and the wiring is available in 25, 50 or 100 feet in length. Usually the kits come with up to four cameras, and you can purchase additional cameras and wiring to fit your needs. If you are installing the security cameras outdoors, then make sure that the cameras are classified as outdoor cameras.
- You will also need to secure several different tools in order to successfully install a security monitoring system. A ladder will be needed so that you can reach the overhead areas onto which the cameras will be installed. Wire pliers will be necessary for any wire cutting that you might do--although the camera wires will have male and female connections. Plastic zip ties will be needed so that you can bunch the wires together and keep the packaged neatly. You will also need wire staplers so that you can attach the wires onto walls, ceilings, and floors. You should also have a tape measure, screwdriver and screw gun.
- When installing the monitoring system, place the recording device behind a locked area. You can build a box around the recorder with a hinged door and a lock, but it is better to place the recorder in a locked and secured room so that an intruder cannot steal the recording device--it is the most important part of the system, besides the cameras. Install the cameras high and out of reach of hands; you don't want the cameras reachable so that they can be damaged or destroyed. Begin installation in the most important areas first, and finish with what you have left in the areas of least risk.
