Building Plans for Platform Beds

Platform beds are economical, space saving and are adaptable for just about any sleeping arrangement. Building plans for platform beds can be designed with drawers underneath for storage or with a simple platform to incorporate into a minimalist room. Platform beds can be fit into a variety of room designs and are great for children's rooms or for use with adults.

Building Plans for Simple Platform Beds

  • Simplistic platform beds are easy to build and have a sleek, minimalist design. The base of the bed consists of a simple rectangular frame of four pieces of wood connected together at the corners. Inside of this frame is a group of wood pieces, slit and put together to add support to the frame. The platform is then placed on top and joined together with brackets and molding with a mattress on top.

Platform Bed Plans with Storage

  • To make a platform bed with storage underneath requires cutting the rectangular frame in half, lengthwise and making it into two frames. By doing this, you add extra support to the middle of the bed without the use of the x-shaped boards in the middle. Put these two frames together to form the base of the bed. Along the outside edges of the frame, two holes can be cut on each side and a wood door can be made, just larger than the hole, then attached with hinges to cover the holes. This creates under-bed storage space that is accessible through the doors.

Platform Beds with Drawers

  • Building a platform bed with drawers underneath is a little more complicated, but only because it requires making the drawers and measuring them carefully to be sure they will fit. When making a bed like this, start with the split frame design and cut the two holes along the sides, but instead of attaching a hinged door, you will be making drawers to slide in the holes. The drawers are not much more than rectangular boxes, but they will need to be measured carefully to be sure that when they are complete, they fit into the holes. The outside board of the drawer should be slightly taller and wider than the hole to prevent the drawer from slipping inside the hole. To keep the back of the drawer from tipping down onto the floor, attach two small blocks to the very back and bottom of the drawers, the same height as bottom of the hole. This will keep the drawers level and prevent them from slipping out of the hole when the drawer is pulled on.
