We love a good tan for keeping us looking vibrant and healthy. But according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, five sunburns can double your risk of getting melanoma (skin cancer). Eek! Limit the sun exposure needed to get a golden glow by accelerating the process with tanning oil. But not just any formula—avoid potentially harmful chemicals by making your own.

Carrier Oil

Castor, coconut, or olive oil are some good options for the main ingredient. Olive oil is our personal favorite since it has some antioxidants to help fight free-radical damage from UV rays. Pour the oil (however much you want) into a bottle.

Tincture of Iodine

Tincture of iodine is sold at drug stores as an antiseptic. It's also useful in blocking radiation. Add several drops to the oil to protect your skin from harmful rays.

Carrot or Beet Juice

There are a couple of natural ingredients you can add to achieve a dark tan. Squeeze a few drops carrot or beet juice into the bottle. The juices may temporarily give your skin a tint of their color but won't last after a couple of showers. Just like wearing dark clothes absorbs heat, the dark juices on your skin attracts the sun's rays and allow them to be more easily absorbed into the skin to darken.

Tips

After you've added all of the ingredients, fasten the lid on the bottle and shake well. Apply liberally all over your body and massage in until fully absorbed. This tanning oil isn't waterproof—reapply after swimming or sweating.
