If your hair is chin-length or shorter, it may seem impossible to create a formal hairstyle for prom, especially if you want an up-do. However, there are many formal hairstyle options available for women with short locks, and they're not too difficult to achieve. By adding a sparkling tiara to the style, you will complete your look.

    Pixie Cuts

  1. Just because your haircut is a closely-cropped pixie cut doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style. One way to make your hair look fancier for prom is to use a ceramic hair straightener. You can use small ceramic straightener with one-inch or smaller flat irons to create flips for short hair.

It's best to position the tiara on your head before creating your style. This will give you an idea of what your style will look like with the tiara, and keep you from covering up any flips you created with the crown. Simply position the straightener close to the root of your hair (be wary that the tool is extremely hot) and flip the iron under and up by flicking your wrist. Basically, your wrist will move as if you are drawing a smile on a smiley face. Finish the flips with a small amount of hair wax.
  2. Chin-Length Hair

  3. When creating a formal prom style for chin-length hair, invest in some bobby pins that are the same color as your hair so that they stay hidden.

Position the tiara on the top of your head before styling, especially if you are creating a complex up-do. Begin by pinning the sides of your hair up towards the back of your head. Then, create three sections of hair in the back of your head. Roll up each section of hair and secure each roll with a few bobby pins. Once all of the sections have been rolled up, you'll have a cute little bundle of flippy spikes at the back of your head where the ends of your hair meet. For the front of your hair, roll each side of your bangs and pull them back. With the tiara on your head, pull the roll of hair over the end of one side of the crown to make it uniform with your style. Do the same with the other rolled side of your bangs.
  4. Hair Extensions

  5. If you want more hair for prom you can always purchase hair extensions. There are a few types of temporary extensions available, most notably glue- and clip-ins. These can be applied by a hairdresser, or you can do them yourself. A great way to get a cute prom up-do is by purchasing a ponytail hairpiece. These come in a variety of different colors, hair types and lengths, and are attached to the back of the head with a large jaw clip. These pieces create a voluminous, small beehive-like mass of hair. Pull your hair back tightly and secure the sides with bobby pins. Then, clamp the ponytail hairpiece about midway up the back of your head. Position the tiara at the top of the ponytail hairpiece.
