Fun Brain Game

Old or young, you can keep your brain sharp and retain your mental acuity by playing brain games every day. You can re-train your brain to think nimbly and quickly or increase your ability to focus. Brain games can be a fun, engaging way to "exercise" your brain and mental abilities much as you exercise your body. If you don't have an Internet connection, don't worry--go to the store and buy little puzzle books or work out the crossword and brain puzzler games in your local newspaper.

    1. Purpose

      • Your brain needs exercise just as much as your triceps, quadriceps and gluteus maximus. While you exercise your body's muscles so you can stay fit and increase your stamina, you can do the same thing for your brain. "Brain exercises" don't have to be painful, boring or cause extreme exertion. These can be fun, engage your attention and make you use different parts of your brain to practice and fine-tune various mental functions such as focusing, concentration and reaction times.
Using brain "exercises" can benefit you at school, work and at home. Encourage your older relatives to begin playing brain games; they will reap the benefits by delaying the loss of mental acuity. If your newspaper has a section that includes games that require thinking, engage your older relatives and challenge them to a few spirited thinking games.

      Different Brain Exercises

      • If you want to increase your thinking speed, play "Speed Match." This game will exercise your ability to process information and learn to think--and react--faster. You can increase verbal fluency with "Word Bubbles." "Bloxorz" will help you to improve your spatial ability. Even better, this game has over 30 skill levels. To improve your concentration, play "Escapa." Pilots in the U.S. Air Force play this game to test their reflexes. Increase your short-term memory with "Ice Cream Stand." Learn to increase your focus and decrease your distractibility by playing "Lost in Migration." Increase your problem-solving skills by playing "Raindrops," an arithmetic game.
