The interstate highway system doesn't get very near Durango, and some folks might consider it hard to access, located on Highways 789 and 160. Its remoteness is undoubtedly what keeps it small and friendly.

At 6,500 feet in the Animas River Valley, the rustic mountain community is notable for a number of reasons. It is the home of Ft. Lewis College, so it has something of a college town ambience. It is near the Purgatory ski area at Durango Mountain Resort, which gives it the flavor of a ski town.

Durango is really just a small town of 16,000 residents who make a living in the education, health care and hospitality industries, which makes it a nice place to live. One note of caution: winter can be cold in Durango.
